Audio Track: Booth Lake

Canoeing on the Pettawawa River in Algonquin P...

Since uploading the track and posting this yesterday, I’ve discovered a technical problem with the track that renders the vocals almost inaudible!  I’m working on fixing it.  Meanwhile, it’s an instrumental for some listeners!!

New audio track uploaded to Soundcloud.  You can listen to it here.

Booth Lake is a poem I wrote in about 1987 after going on my first canoe camping trip in Algonquin Park, Ontario.  Although I’d grown up in the wild of Atlantic Canada, and camping was an annual family holiday, I’d never experienced anything quite like Algonquin Park.  We canoed and portaged and camped on the shores of Booth Lake; a magical, mystical expanse of water surrounded by dead wood – just as the poems says: “…torn from land by storm, sculpted by wind, rain, ice – bleached by sun, beached to stand sentinel…”   This poem is also mentioned in Q is for Quiet.

I’ve been working on this track for quite some time: selecting loops, making loops from loon call recordings, recording several vocal versions and playing around with it.  Last night, Santana‘s Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation popped up in a random play on my iPlayer and I said: “That’s it, that’s what Booth Lake needs – that sound, that feeling.”  So thanks to inspiration – and more – from Carlos Santana I was finally able to produce a track I’m satisfied enough with to make public.

Have a listen. Let me know what you think. Listen here.

Life is an amazing journey.

Meal planning is my weakness. I’m proud that I planned this meal far enough in advance to take the home made baked beans out of the freezer to defrost. Did that this morning.  Wanted them to add to yesterday’s left-overs:…Read more ›
